The 1st AFRO
ASIAN GAMES began with an awesome show that fittingly
highlighted the majesty of two continents coming together in the
sporting arena for the first time.
The controversies the trauma the suspense were all forgotten and
for close to four hours the audience at the GMC Balayogi Stadium
at Gachibowli was treated to an unforgettable show that went off
with clockwork precision. From the moment the Skydivers of the
Indian Air force touched down spot on till the last of the
lasers and a dazzling array of PYROTECHNICS let up the Night
Sky.

As the President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam declared the Afro Asian
Games closed, the flame in the giant bowl opposite to the VIP
stand dimmed and diminished. Instantly the night sky lit up in
the brightness of the pyrotechnics display. Streaks of lights
shot upwards from all sides of huge stadium, the seemingly
never-ending fireworks leaving the arena engulfed in a haze of
smoke.

The fireworks
were spectacular & the response from a vast gathering at the
incomparable Eden Garden so overwhelming that even the Aussies
at cricket Wills World Cup 1996 have felt the warmth. The saving
grace of the Opening Ceremony was the spectacular firework
display.
